One of Toyota’s first offerings to the west, the Celica has been a success story for the past 35 years. From its initial launch until now, the Celica has remained adept at attracting drivers from all kinds of backgrounds and different walks of life. Though its body would change significantly over the years, it has been successful as a coupe, sedan, and a convertible. By 1982, all Celicas came standard with fuel-injection – which was a sign of greater innovation and changes to come. By the fourth generation, the Celica ran on a 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive. By 1990, the fifth generation Celica’s look, like many other Toyota models at that time, had received an aerodynamic makeover that had a well-received smoother, more modern appearance. All-Trac tires, greater horsepower, and standard driver-side airbags ensured the 5th generation would only cement the reputation Toyota had been cultivating over the first four.

In 1994 and 2000, Toyota introduced the 6th and 7th generations of the Celica. Both improving, refining, and expanding the offerings of previous generations. The 6th generation was larger and introduced new options like sound insulation and the ST with its 1.8L 4-cylinder (removed in 1998), the GT with its 2.2L 4-cylinder (removed and then again brought back when the ST was removed), and the hatchback. The 7th generation has proven to be the definitive for the Celica. With a lighter chassis, double rear suspension, 1.8L 4-cylinder, and standard 5-speed transmission, this generation continued to win the favor of new drivers and accumulate more awards. All together, the Celica has been decorated again and again by nearly everyone who gives automobile awards. The list includes JD Power & Associates (1998), Motor Trend’s Car of the Year (2000), Car and Driver Magazine’s Ten Best (2000), Consumer Guide Recommended Buy (2003 & 2004), and IntelliChoice’s Top Ten Lowest Maintenance Cost (2005).
