About M5

The older brother of the M3, BMW M5 saw the light of the day for the first time in 1985. It is the highest end model of the 5 Series from the BMW, boasting the highest level of performance inside the series. The first generation M5 features no visible changes on the outside, as it kept the look and panels of the BMW Series 5 sedan. However, under the hood a 6 cylinder 3.5 liter engine was to be found. Featuring 4 valves per cylinder the engine is able to provide 286 hp and reach 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. It tops at 155 mph.

The M5 version of the E34 series is built different from the initial M5 created on the E28S platform. The engine capacity was initially increased to 3.6 liters and 315 hp then modified again to 3.8 liters straight six developing no less than 340 hp. It reaches 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and it is limited to a top speed of 152 mph. The next generation of BMW M5 had the base of the E39 series. Several adjustments are made in order to cope with the increase in power provided by the 4.9 liter V8 petrol engine boasting 394 hp. A reinforced clutch is used to work with the 6+1 manual transmission, a limited slip differential (25% max slip) and vented rotor brakes are used on all four wheels.

The latest two renditions of the BMW M5 are based on the platforms of BMW E60 and F10. The first one comes with a 5 liter V10 engine with odd firing technology, while the F10 M5 holds 4.4L twin turbo petrol unit able to push the car with 575 hp. Both models offer a 6 speed manual transmission, although the F10 M5 manual is available only in the US. The other gearbox option is a 7-speed automatic SMGIII and respectively dual-clutch transmission.
